Dawn is a painting created using black and white woodcut that reflects in profile the sober but chaotic vision I approached my explorations and understandings of life and existence in my 30s. The journey, as I exited the gates of University and entered into the rigors of carving out a living in the world at large, as well as the tempering of working as a professional print maker and print technician, have given me a novice insight into living and existence. I began a self-analysis that gradually gave way to understanding the multiplicity of human beings.
Dawn is a revelation of the duality of humanity through the mode of self-portrait. The simplicity, clarity and succinct approach of black and white woodcut expresses the self that mocks itself in the mirror upon rising in the morning – yawning and conscious but not fully awake, a guise that both logical and chaotic. It is a reflection of a perception of human existence.
