Malaysia-born British artist James Cheen Fueen Seow incorporates plants and other life-forms into his artistic practice to explore ecological concerns and express marginalised non-anthropocentric perspectives. Using the media of print, photography, sculpture and installation, Seow explores the connections between Eastern and Western aesthetics and the interplay between tradition and modernity.
‘Untamed’ presents groups of weeds and insect specimens scanned digitally, intricately collaged, and presented in a state of natural disarray. Each growth is clearly identifiable alongside the insects that accompany and feed on it. This complex digital college visualises a mythical, naturalistic space that balances reality and illusion. The work brings into focus an alternative prescription of and engagement with the world, particularly bodily relationship between humans and nature.
